Recap:
Eveland started and got the win, but his outing was a mixed bag. He had a scoreless
first, only giving up a soft single. But in the second things don't go so well.
Angel Chavez walks. On a sequence that I'm finding hard to understand the Paul (the
batter) reaches first on a throwing error by Murphy - playing 2nd, Chavez scores.
Paul then reaches 3rd on a missed catch by leftfielder Murphy. Maybe he was covering
third? The next batter hits a run scoring single to right fielder Cunningham (yeah
Cunningham!) The next batter strikesout. Eveland gets two more groundouts to end
the inning. In the 3rd Eveland gives up back to back homers. He doesn't give up
another run and is relieved by Kilby in the 7th. So mixed bag. Shafer pitches the
8th allowing one unearned run and Marshall tossed a scoreless 9th.
.
Apparently the promotion did nothing to mess with Cunningham's confidence as he
continued right where he left off at Midland with a homer and double. Murphy also
hit a solo homer in the 8th.

Recap:
Windsor started the game and got lit. Up. Ouch. He got through the first unscathed
but ran into trouble in the second. Windsor walks the lead-off batter (that is never
good). Next up, homer run. Next, single to left. In the next AB, Windsor throws
one WP, runner advances to second. Then he throws another WP, runner advances to
third. Not surprisingly he ends up walking the batter. Next batter pops out to
Sellers. Next batter gets a bunt hit, runner scores, runner advances to second.
Next batter singles on a soft groundball to first, runners advance to second and
third. Next batter out Sacfly to right, runner on third scores, runner on second
advances. Andrew Bailey relieves Windsor and gets the final out of the inning.
The Hounds go on to lose 9-1.
.
Everidge scored the only run, on a solo homerun in the 4th.

Banwart had a very strong game going 7 innings and only allowing 1 earned run while
striking out 8 and only walking 1. He was relieved by Italiano who tossed a scoreless
8th. Time will tell if this is just a temporary move until he can regain some
confidence. Heuser pitched a scoreless 9th but wasn't so lucky in the 10th. With
the game tied 1-1, the inning started well with a ground out to first. One out, two
to go. The next hitter walked. Followed by another walk and then a HPB. Bases
loaded on 2 walks and hbp. Apparently feeling the pressure Hueser walked the next
batter, score 2-1, bases still loaded one out. Demel replaced Heuser and gives up a
single to the first batter he faces. Score 3-1, still only one out. The next batter
grounds out 4-3, the runner on third scores. The inning ends with a strikeout
swinging. The Ports get two on in the 10th but the game ends on a gidp by Horton.
.
Carter scored the only run for the Ports, a solo shot in the 4th, running
his HR total to 32 and RBI to 92, good for first and second in the league.

Recap:
Richmond pitched very well until the 8th where the wheels literally fell off for the
Cougs. The inning started with an error. He promptly stole second, staying out of
the doubleplay on the grounder to pitcher the next hitter hit. 1 IBB and PHB later,
Richmond was pulled. Hertzler relieved Richmond and based on this outing isn't going
to be get many votes for Fireman of the Year... he gave up a two run single to the
first batter he faced. Then threw the ball away on a pick off attempt. Now with a
runner on third he balks him home. A bit too little, too late, he strikes out the
next two batters, finally getting out of the innings. But the damage was done as
the Cougs lost to Beloit 6-2
.
The offense wasn't very productive, getting 11 hits but only scoring 2 runs.
.
The Cougars committed 2 errors, unfortunately as stated above they were both in the
same inning.

Recap:
In his first start of the season, Gordon had a pretty uneven outing. He did fine the
first two throwing two 1-2-3 innings. Not sure if he started to tire but things got
a little rocky after that. 2 runs scored on a single, sb, double, single (in that
order). Another runner stole a second base, but did not score. The fourth inning
was one of "those" innings... it started off with the lead-off batter getting aboard
via a walk. The next batter KS, good sign, perhaps Gordon will get out of it. Er no.
The next batter reaches on an error (missed catch by Spencer) advancing the runner to
third. Donaldson drops a ball in foul terriroty extending the AB of Haley who is
willing to give himself up with a sacbunt, but he reached on the third error of the
inning another missed catch by Spencer. Two runners score and Haley, who remember was
trying to give himself up, ends up on third and should have been out anyway. Spencer
also had a throwing error in that same sequence for good measure. Jackson, the next
hitter hits a FC, Haley scores, BUT Donaldson taking his cue from Spencer has a catching
error, so Jackson ends up on second. He steals third and scores on.... (wait for it)
a WP. The batter ends up striking out and the next hitter grounds out 4-3. Spencer
does not miss the ball... I don't even want to figure out the blunders in that inning.
And to think it all started with a walk. Order is restored as Dewing relieves Gordon
throwing 2 scoreless. Benacka comes in 7 and is charged with his first blown save,
but ends up getting the win as he goes 2 allowing 1 earned run on a solo homer, while
striking out 5. Currin pitched a scoreless 9th getting this 6th save of the
season as the Ports rally for a 9-7 victory.
.
Carter, DH'ing hit his 31th homer; we'll have to see if it is a permanent move with
Valez (who had been playing second) moved to third and Martinez, demoted from Midland,
played second. Donaldson trying to make amends hit his 5th, Brown hit his 8th.

Disaster pretty much hit in the 5th. The lead off batter reaches on a single to

Next batter singles to center scoring one and advancing the runner to third. Next
batter reaches on a fielding error by Doolittle, runner scores, runner advances to

Godfrey pitched fairly well outside of a hiccup in the 6th. In this case the hiccup
= 3 runs. Down 1-zip the inning started, as these things often do, with the lead off
runner getting abroad, this time via a HBP. The next batter sacrifices him to second.
This is followed by a run scoring double. And this is followed by a homer. Lead
gone, a lead the Nuts would not relinquish as the Ports fell 6-2. Henry Rodgriguez
relieved Godfrey, and now pitching out of the bullpen, struggles continued. He gave
up 3 runs, 2 earned in 2 IP with no walks and 4 strikeouts. He's still such an
intriguing prospect... you just hope at some point it all starts to click for him.

Recap:
Mazzaro made his debut and pitched better than his line would indicate.
Perhaps showing his nerves he led the game off with hitting the first
batter he faced. He gave up a single then walked the next batter. Then
struck out the next 3 batters. Had a 1-2-3 second inning. In the third
the lead off batter reached base on a Mazzaro throwing error. During the
next ab he steals seconds and the batter walks. Next batter hits an RBI
single. Mazzaro bounces back nicely by getting a FO, KS and another fly
out to end the innings. He had a 1-2-3 4th. And only allowed a single in
the 6th. The 6th is where he came undone. The leadoff batter doubles to
start the inning. Next batter hits an rbi single. Next batter sacrifices
the runner to second. Next batter reaches on a walk. Next batter singles,
scoring one runner as the next advances to third. Next batter has a sacfly
to right, runner advances to third. Kilby replaces Mazzaro who gets the final
out. Overall you have to be pleased with Mazzaro's outing, especially
considering how young he is. He ended up throwing 101 pitching, 67 strikes.
I'm sure now that his debut is out of the way, he'll pick up right were he
left off in AA. Marshall relieved Kilby and threw a one scoreless inning
with 1 K and 2 BB. Prinz allowed one earned run, no allowing a hit, but
walking 3 as Memphsis beat the Rivercats 7-1.

Recap:
Moore who has pitched in Midland, Kane County and now Stockton started the game.
He gave up 3 runs all in the second, where he certainly didn't help his cause.
The inning started with a single to left. The next batter is called out on strikes.
Next batter singles to left. Moore then throws a WP and both runners move up 90
feet. After the WP the batter singles and runner on 3rd scores, runner on second
advances to 3rd. Moore throws another WP, runner on 3rd scores, runner on second
advances. A double scores the running on 3rd and that's how the Nuts scored their
first 3 runs. They wouldn't score until the 9th where the Nuts once again helped
by the Ports. Heuser walks the lead off hitter, the runner advances on a failed PO
attempt, and by that time was there any doubt he'd end up scoring the winning run?
Nope, I guess that's just baseball as the Ports fell 4-3 to Modesto.
.
Carter hit his 30th homerun... man if he can ever get his glove work straigtened out
he could be the answer to the A's 3rd base woes. But until that happens, he'll be in
line for the DH spot. Spencer hit his 6th since coming over in the Blanton trade.
Donaldson hit a triple! Cardenas was promoted to Midland.

Capra was the hard-luck loser as the Cougs lost 5-1 to Beloit. He went 6
innings and allowed 2 runs, while K'ing 4 and walking 2. He was relieved by
Hodsdon and Kerfoot. Looks like Hodsdon maybe have been demoted to the bullpen.
He threw 2 scoreless innings. Kerfoot had his first real struggle, facing
8 batters and surrendering 3 runs, 2 earned and 4 hits and a homer in 1 IP.
.
Richard continues to hit well, but his fielding is what I'd imagine is holding
him back from a promotion to Stockton. Hollingsworth scored the only run. Cobb

News & Notes
Cahill picked up the win for USA baseball in a warm up game before the Olympics. He worked four scoreless innings as USA beat Canada 7-2.
Robert Swindle, the Phillies reliever has been promoted to AAA where's he's struggled just a little. Giving up 7 runs in 29 innings his era has "ballooned" to 2.17. He pretty much can get either righties or lefties out, and still making hitters work for their runs. K'ing 40 and only walking 6. Though he will give up hits, 27 in 23 games. He's sort of a fun guy to watch, at least he is for me.

New Look and Content
Hello All or to the two peeps who actually visit this site. :-)
I was informed that the site was a little boring... so I decided that maybe it was time to try something different. I'm going to start posting the lineups and the players will be linked to their MilB page. I usually try to list all the pitchers and just the "future stars" in terms of offense.
And by "future stars" I mean anybody who (hopefully) doesn't turn into more "soft-swinging pansies".
And speaking of soft-swinging pansies I've added something I think is kind of cool. Over at BP they've generated a report on all the minors. Unfortunately because of formatting difficulties or limitations of the blogger platform I can't really make it any easier to read. In the chart below (Rivercats post) I have gathered information from BP Prospectus that lays out what our prospects are projected to do. The first 5 columns (position, age, hits, homeruns, rbis) are all actuals. Then in the next 4 groups of columns (Batting Average, On Base Average, Slugging Average, Equivalent Average) the first column in the group is the player's actual numbers/stat, the second is adjusted for the league and stadium they play in, and the final column is what they are projected to do at the major league level. That projection probably gets a bit looser as a prospect is farther away from actually getting to the majors, but if you're interested in what someone at Sacramento may do in Oakland, here you go.
I'll be posting this information for both our hitters and pitchers. Hitting wise in the PCL we don't really have much. Patterson and Linden (who isn't even in our system anymore) and both old(er) for AAA grade out to be our besting hitting prospects. That's not good. But not that big of a surprise, as anybody who has watched the A's offense this year can attest.

So still no Buck, but it looks as if Mazzaro has been added to the roster.
He's just a baby so it will be interesting to see how he fares against more
mature hitters. Good luck Vince.
.
It took 13 innings but the Cats finally prevailed over Nashville. Knox was
the hardluck pitcher, throwing 7 innings and only allowing 1 earned run. He
struck out 2 and didn't walk anybody. Foulke came in and gave up 2 earned in
one inning and got the blown save. Wing and Prinz both threw 1.1 scoreless
innings each. Vulturing a W, Kilby pitched a scoreless 13th.
.
4 runs in 13 innings, there's not going to be a ton of offense but Denorfia
had 2 rbis on a double and Rogowski drove in one. It's looking as if Buck
has to be out with some type injury as Knoedler, a catcher(!), came in as a PR.
.
As discussed above here is the new content to the site (doesn't that sound formal?)
Unfortunately until I can figure out how to copy/paste or somehow copy a chart with
it's formatting I'll probably only be able to update these numbers one, maybe twice

Yikes Italiano struggled again. Only going 2.2 innings and facing 17 batters,
he allowed 6 hits, 3 earned runs, walked 4 and stuck out 4, allowed a homer and
raising his era to 11.05 as the Ports fell to Visalia 5-4. Stockton made it
interesting scoring late in the 7th, 8th and 9th but they couldn't quite get
it done. Gordon pitched 3.1 and saved the bullpen giving up only one homer.
Benacka finished it, going 2 innings with 2 K's and one run on 4 hits.
.
A's fan hide your eyes as the Ports decided to do their best A's impression...
striking out 15 times to only 6 hits. Though they were pretty efficent with those
4 hits - scoring 4 runs and only leaving 4 on base. Spencer "only" had a double with
2 K's, Cardenas was hitless with 3 K's, Carter had a solo solo homer with 3 K's,
Donaldson scored a run, had a single and K'd twice. Brown had a double, with 2 K's.

With the promotion of Italiano, Deal apparently is making a bid to be a starter.
He had a quality start, pitching 6 innings, allowing 5 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned,
walking 4 and striking out 1 with two homers. But the Cougs prevailed 7-6 over
the Whitecaps. Hertzler got his 3rd hold eventhough he allowed 2 runs, and Espinal
though getting his first BS, got the win as the Cougs scored a run in the 9th.
.
The Cougars continue to struggle in the field committing 3 errors. Keough had 2 and
Deal, not exactly helping his cause, also had one.
.
Richard had 2 hits and 2 runs, Dowling went hitless, Jake Smith had two RBI's and a hit.
Cobb had a single, double, two runs and 1 rbi.

Devine started the game and this rehab start went much better than his previous
one(s). Throwing one innings on 12 pitches (9 strike), he allowed no hits or walks
while K'ing 1. Gissell took over in the second and I guess had a quality start (??)
going 6 allowing 5 hits but 3 earned runs, striking out 3 and walking 3, as the
Rivercats fell to Nashville 4-2. Wing came in and pitched for .1, allowing an
earned run, raising he era to a whooping 1.45 (unless the stats page hasn't been
updated yet, in which case his era may be 1.65).
.
Patterson, proving he's a fabulous AAAA player got a hit and rbi, Pennington and Petit
were both hitless, Barton had a solo homer in 4AB's, hopefully that is a portent of
good things to come. Buck did not play (again).

The Rockhounds gained another game on league leading Frisco as they beat the
Riders 9-6. Webb started the game buw was only able to go 5, while allowing 5 runs
(3 earned) with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks. Fernandez pitched 2 innings
and got his first hold, allowing 1 earned run on 1 hit, 3 walks and 3 k's,
Carney's son got his first save of the season going two with 4 k's, 1
walk and no hits. ....
.
Doolittle continues to get more comfortable at AA, with 2 hits including a
2 run homer, Cunningham had 3 hits, Herrera DH'ing had 2 hits and a run. Still
only 23, though probably a bit old for AA, it will be interesting to see if he
can finally put it all together. Once considered a top prospects in the system,
injuries have derailed a once promising career. But in the last two games he's
shown flashes of why the A's once thought so highly of him.

Godfrey had a quality start, though allowing 10 hits, only two scored. He struck
out 4 and walked 2. Demel came in the 8th with the basesloaded and didn't
allow a run. Unfortunately he didn't fare so well in the 9th. In a tie game he
gave up a double and a sacfly as the Ports lost 5-4 to the Nuts.
.
Cardenas and Carter both had one hit in 5ABs, Spencer continues to hit the cover
off the ball, gathering 3 hits including a double, Donaldson had a single, scored
a run along with a walk and strikeout.
