Borrell had a dandy night also (my favorite word apparently). He threw 6
innings, sturck out 7 and walked 2 allowing only one run as the Cats beat
Oklahoma 5-2. Gray pitched an inning and got the hold, hard throwing Blevins
threw 2, allowed a run, struck out 2 and got his 4th save. Buck was back in the
line-up after sitting during the second game of yesterday's doubleheader and he
finally broke out. He had 3 hits, including a homer, 4 rbi's and scored a run.
Melilo had one hit and one rbi. Baisley and Petit both had 1 hit and scored
2 runs. Powell had a hit. Both Gargo and Powell had throwing errors.

Webb also had a dandy night. He went 7 innings allowing only 1 earned run, the
defense let him down as total runs scored was 2. He struck out 3 and walked
2 while throwing 100 pitches, 61 for strikes. I can only assume by the 3 K's
his *stuff* wasn't overpowering, but he kept the batters off balance as 18
of the outs recored were ground outs. The Rockhounds beat San Antonio 9-3. When
you score 9 runs there's usually lots of heros so lets begin. Donovan in the lead
off spot scored a run, got a hit and drove in two, Pennington scored and walked,
Cunningham had a single and hit his first homer of the season, while driving in two.
Zeringue DH'd and scored... but I'm not sure how. He had no hits or BB, must have
reached on an error. Recker had an rbi on two hits and scored two. Everidge hit
his seventh! homer, drove in two and scored a run. And finally Massaro had two hits,
scored a run and drove in one. The boys in Midland need to be a bit more patient as
overall they walked but twice, but k'd 6 times.

Wow. What can you say about Cahill? Dandy, dandy night! He pitched 6 innings,
struck out 8 and walked 3 allowing one earned run. Leon, who is only 19!, pitched
two scoreless and got the hold, Demel had a perfect 9th, struck out 2 and notched
his 3rd save, as the Ports beat Bakersfield 4-1. If I had one gripe looking at
the box is that the Ports had 11 hits and only converted them to 4 hits. And
yes I realize how that sounds, some people are never happy! :) Anyway to the
boys swinging the lumber... Mitchell scored a run, walked and got a hit, Horton
hit a double and walked, Doolittle had 2 rbi's and hit his 9th homer of the young
season. Carter had a double, Morris walked and singled and Slu hit a homer, scored
and drove in two.

Richmond had a dandy night, throwing 5.2 innings of shut out ball, while
striking out 5 and walking 1. Friend pitched in relief and finished the
game for his 3rd save as the Cougars beat the Quad City Bandits 4-1. The
Cougars only had five hits but apparently made the most of them. Ray and
Smith both had triples. Fosse would be proud since Smith is the catcher..
Btw I failed to mention that in last night's game Italiano and Moore combined to

The offense was quite efficient with 11 runs on 11 hits. Leading off, Donovan

The postponed game didn't seem to bother Craig Italiano as he pitched five
innings and improved his record to a perfect 4-0. Italiano struck out 7,
walked 3 and only allowed one hit. Moore came in and pitched 4 innings
allowing a run as the Cougars beat the Bandits 11-1. Matt Smith, C, had
five rbis and raised his OPS to .900, scored twice and threw out a runner.
In the lead off position, Keough walked 4 times and scored trice. Dowling
scored twice and hit a homer. Correa, the shortstop hit his first homerun.
.
Obviously the baseball gods that follow the A's read my snarky comment about no
A's shortstop hitting a homer at any level. Now that's two in just about as many
games. Now if Pennington jacks one, we'll know for sure there was devine
intervention.

The Ports and Visalia exchanges shut outs over the last two days, unfortunately
for the Ports they were the shut-outees this time around. As far as I can tell
Heuser made his first start of the season. Unfortunately it wasn't a very good.
He went 5.1IP and allowed 5 earned on 5 hits, while K'ing 5 and walking 3.
Foulke pitched 2 innings gave up a homer, was charged with a balk, struck out one
and with no walks as the Ports were shut-out and lost of Visalia.

BTW for those of you who don't read the ESPN message board, he has a

I didn't do a write up regarding yesterday's game because I'm tyring to be
more timely with my updates. However, I think it's worth mentioning that
H Rodriguez had another rough outing. He allowed 4 earned runs on 6 hits
in 2.1 innings of work. He did strikeout 6 but also walked 3. I think
the A's were a little hasty in his promotion, there is no doubting his
electric stuff, he can hit 100mph on the gun (or so I've heard) but with
other pitchers, Cahill, Anderson at A+ with better numbers I wonder
if the A's are going to rethink their promotion. I guess time will only
answer that question. Here's to hoping he can figure it out.
.
So on to the current game. Mazzaro threw 92 pitches (52 strikes) in 5,
allowing two runs, 0 earned (now isn't that a familiar refrain?) while
striking out 5 and walking 2. Marshall pitched 2 scoreless innings and got his
6th hold, while Carignan only needed 12 pitches to notch his second save as
Midland beat Frisco 5-4. Guzman scored and knocked in two on a homer and single.
Zeringue went hitless, recently promoted Cunningham scored and hit a single.

Wow. You have to wonder what exactly they said as Harden made his second rehab
assignment. He was brilliant through 6, K'ing 9, allowing 3 hits, no runs, but
drilled 3 hitters. Maybe they disparaged hockey? Lansford pitched 3 innings of
relief and got his first save of the season as the Ports beat the Oaks 14 to 0.
Lots and lots of offense... Gilbert scored three, hit a single and stole a base.
Horton scored two runs, on two hits, a homer (the first for a shortstop at any
level this season) and a double. Doolittle contineus to rake, knocking in two
and and scoring two, on two hits a double and a homer, which gives him 7 for the
season, tying him with teammate Jed Morris. 7 homers is good for 3rd most in the
league. Speaking of homers, though he didn't hit one tonight, Carter the league
leader with 10, scored two on a single and double. The amazing story of Jeb Morris
continues had he drove in five on two doubles and a single while scoring
two himself. Mitchell and Sulentic both contributed..
.
Every single offensive player had a hit. Every player but one scored a run. The
team struck out 7 times and walked 5 times.

duel. But there was lots of offense: Buck, leading off, singled, scored a run
and drew 2 walks. Gaetti continues to make me look brillant that he does indeed
belong in the A's top 20 by scoring a run, knocking in 5 on a homer, a double
and a single. Melillo joined the fun with 2 walks, 2 runs and a hit. Putnam,
returning to the lineup (I think) also had a noteworthy day, gathering 2 rbis,
scoring 2 on a single and a double.

Webb got roughed up in his outing against Frisco, surrendering 5 runs, 4
earned in 5 innings, while striking out 4 and walking one. But the Hounds
prevailed 10-6. Carignan continues to impress, pitching a scoreless inning
while K'ing one and walking one. Currin had an even better inning, only
needing 6 pitches, all strikes, to retire the side. Guzman is coming down to
earth a bit, but still had an rbi on one hit, while drawing 2 walks. I wonder if
he's getting pitched around a bit. Zeringue scored 2 and knocked in 2 on a
single and double, with two walks. Donovan drew a walk, scored two and hit
a single and double. Cunningham is starting to hit, he drove in 2 on two singles.
Pennington continues to struggle.
.
As the June draft approaches, it's sometimes hard for me to forget that in 2006
Pennington got a 2M+ signing bonus and Smoak, who the A's took in the later
rounds, could not come up with an additional 50K to sign him. Smoak was a high
schooler who had committed to the Gamecocks (of S Carolina?) and was very open
that his signing demand was a cool 1M. According to Baseball America, the A's
offered 950,000K. In 2007 Jim Callis of BA said this about him, "Smoak is a
candidate to go No. 1 overall". Both BP and BA have him going to the Giants
(UGH!!!) 5th and some less reputable mock drafts have him going 2nd to the Pirates.
Of course it's not my money, and maybe the A's felt it was just too much of a risk
to give that type of money to a later round high schooler. But still, it definately
falls under the category of what might have been.
.
James Simmons was the Texas League player of the week (tip of the hat to Calicool for
the heads up). He posted an 1.93 era in 14 innings, while striking out 13. Regarding
Simmons, Bryan Smith of BP had this to say about him in a chat: "He stands as the first
in line of reaching the Major Leagues. Since they are all on the same team, I think
ranking them is sort of a strange thing to do. Simmons probably has a realistic chance
of pitching with the A's as early as August, especially if Smith/Eveland regress and/or
Blanton gets traded. He just looks too consistently good for the Texas League right now.
He'll be up first, and if he pitches well, Simmons won't have to worry when the A's have
an in-flux of those great High-A arms, I'll say that."

Godfrey, who has been in 8 games and used primarily as a reliever, seems to
like pitching better as a starter. Allowing 5 hits and one earned run, on
a homer, he pitched 6 innings as the Ports beat Modesto 8-5. Demel and
Farley combined to shutout the Nuts for 3 as the Ports got 3 in the 11th
and Farley got the W. The hitting hero has to go to Carter who hit his
league leading 10th homer, a three run jimmy jack for the victory, scoring
Horton and Doolittle. Kudos go to Gilbert who collected 3 hits and a rbi,
Horton who scored in the 11th and hit a double and single, Morris who hit a
homer (adding to his eye popping 1.053 OPB - good for 3rd in the CA League)
and Mitchell who scored, hit a double and drew 2 walks.
.
Speaking of Morris, the league notebook had this to say about him: "If all C
Jed Morris had done this year was take the field every day behind home plate,
it would already be one of the feel-good stories of the year as he returns
from leukemia, which put baseball on the back burner for 18 months. What
Morris has done at the plate has been remarkable, no matter what the situation.
Despite seeing a 16-game hitting streak (best in the league this season) snapped
on May 1, he has posted a 1.048 slugging percentage this week and led the league
with three homers and 12 RBIs. Overall, his .667 slugging percentage was fifth in
the league and he single-handedly kept his team's six-game winning streak alive on
April 29 with a decisive RBI double in an 8-7 victory over Visalia. He'd homered
earlier in the game and had two triples and four RBIs the following night in an
11-10 loss that ended the streak.".

Richmond had an outhing I'm sure he'd rather forget as the Cougars fell to
Clinton 11-4. Richmond allowed 6 runs, 5 earned in 6IP. The bullpen wasn't
much of a stopper allowing 5 earned in 3 innings. The offense didn't do much
of note, Corey Brown had one hit and a rbi, Cobb had two doubles but didn't
drive anybody home.

A few observations is our pitching is very, very sound. Simmons has had
amazing control and along with Chaill and Anderson these kids are
pitching great. Leon is only 19! And this list doesn't include some of
the "upside" guys like Gio, DLS, HRod.
On the hitting front, we have a lot of 1B and OF prospects but the infield
seems slim picking. There is a pretty big drop off between the guys listed
and the rest of the players at those positions. I even cheated a little by
sliding Guzman over to third, though he plays second most of the time.

De Los Santos shut down: Fautino De Los Santos, a 22-year-old right-hander acquired
in the Nick Swisher deal with Chicago, has been shut down for a few weeks with elbow
soreness, according to assistant general manager David Forst.
De Los Santos was 2-2 with a 5.87 ERA at Stockton. He's allowed 29 hits and 11 walks
in 23 innings, and had 26 strikeouts. His last outing was April 24.

Speaking of scuffling, the Cats were shut out against the Iowa Cubs as Saarloos
allowed 4 runs (2 earned) in 7 innings. He struck out 4 and walked one with
no home runs. Gaetti and Powell both had errors and Travis Buck playing center
went o'fer in two ABs. Not much offense to speak of when a team is shutout :)
It's a good thing that there's quite a bit of parity in the Pacific Division.

Simmons was excellent in 7 IP allowing 2 earned runs while striking out 6 and
walking 2, Jay Marshall got the loss, walking two and allowing a run in 1.2
innings of work. Guzman followed up his o'fer in his previous game with a
run and a double, Myers drove in one on a hit and 2 BB.
The problem with the Rockhounds is their hitting, with only 3 players with OPS over
.800, my critieria for usually mentioning offensive feats is if you have an OPS
over .900. It will interesting to see if some of the guys start warming up as the
season progresses.

Gio had a rough outing, giving up 6 runs (5 earned) in 4IP with zero
K's and 5BB. The bullpen didn't fare much better allowing 6 more runs in 5IP as
the Cats fell 12-6 to the Cubbies. Recently promoted J Gaetti continued to rake
assembling 2 hits (a homer and double), 2 runs, 3 rbis upping his team leading
OPS of 2.067, hopefully it's not all sample size. Melillo added to the lost
cause with a homer. Powell did not play.
On aside, and this may be more an issue of not following minor league ball much,
but the errors are troubling. As is the case with the big club, up and down
the farm our players continue to commit errors. Let us hope, as with Oakland, the
